I happened across an article titled “Medical illustrator helps doctors talk to patients” by Scott Jared which peaked my interest. The article speaks about an artist named Mark Schornak who is a medical illustrator. When I think about digital art I think about more abstract concepts, art that one chooses to create digitally because it is difficult or impossible to do using physical materials yet, artists have uncovered one of the many inconspicuous uses of digital art. To be used as a teaching tool in many industries, the medical field in particular benefits from digital representations of human anatomy. Using photoshop and 3D computer modeling softwares, medical illustrators are able to help doctors, researchers, and patients. They assist doctors with planning sugeries and informing patients of diseases, injuries, and surgery plans. Illustrations can be helpful due to blood and surrounding anatomy blocking the view, anatomical illustrations simplify things for doctors and make diagnoses more easily understandable and safe feeling for patients. I can only imagine how the use of layers and the ability to alter the opacity of illustrations can benefit the understanding of complex medical procedures. Where access to anatomical material and information is limited, the rise of technology and this form of art aids these issue and allows the information to be more widely available. The customizability of such illustrations is vital for all who may benefit from these illustrations due to particular patient to patient needs. This is a beautiful use of digital art/illustration and another reason why it is so important for digital art to be recognized around the world.
