The article, “The most expensive GIF of all time” published in 2014, must have seemed absurd at the time although in society today the price of $5,800 is laughable when looking at the most expensive gifs sold to date. Digital artists have worked extremely hard to gain the recognition and platform that is now the new normal. When this article was published, digital art was not only looked down upon but definitely not taken seriously or appreciated like it is today. It was once a medium people did not see any value or expertise in until the world finally did. The gif that this article was written about was made to be a replica of a physical and astronomically expensive statue which is what gave it its title of “The most expensive GIF of all time”. This is interesting when looking at the differences between 2014 and 2022 because now most of the “best” digital art is not created in order to replicate something or be in its shadow, but to create something new that many did not think were possible. Digital art has transformed the art world and widened imaginations about what is possible. Digital art seems as though it was created for those who do think outside the box, it is a medium that allows the visualization of the impossible. With this new mindset, we continue to explore the potential digital art can reach. Attached are the top 5 most expensive NFTs to date.
